2026 French Municipal Elections Marked by Record Abstention and Significant RN Gains

The first round of France's 2026 municipal elections on March 15 saw an unprecedented abstention rate exceeding 40%, the highest since the Fifth Republic's founding, excluding the COVID-impacted 2020 elections. Voter turnout stood between 56% and 58%, a slight improvement over 2020's 45% but notably lower than 2014's 63.55%. Analysts interpret this widespread abstention as a sign of growing disillusionment with politics amid recent national and international pressures.

Amid this context, the Rassemblement National (RN) secured a strong electoral surge, winning several key cities and re-electing incumbent mayors with commanding margins. Louis Aliot, RN mayor of Perpignan, achieved re-election outright in the first round with 50.6% of the vote, improving substantially from his 35% in 2020. Similarly, David Rachline was re-elected in Fréjus with 51.33%, despite lacking the RN's official endorsement, and Steeve Briois retained Hénin-Beaumont with a commanding 77.71%.

Jordan Bardella, RN president, hailed these results as reflecting public demand for order and fiscal responsibility, proposing alliances with other right-wing lists ahead of the second round. Meanwhile, La France Insoumise also made notable gains, winning Saint-Denis and competing closely elsewhere.

Traditional parties faced setbacks: Edouard Philippe maintained his position in Le Havre with 43.7% amid a triangular contest, while Les Républicains saw significant losses in major cities like Marseille. Local races in Sarthe revealed contrasting fortunes, with Stéphane Le Foll leading decisively in Le Mans but RN candidates challenging incumbents in La Flèche and Sablé-sur-Sarthe.

The election results highlight a fractured political landscape shaped by voter disengagement and a rising RN that has capitalized on public dissatisfaction. As negotiations for the second round begin, all eyes are on potential alliances and shifting voter sentiments ahead of a critical prelude to the 2027 presidential elections.
