2026 Tour de France Femmes Kicks Off with Strong Focus on Women's Cycling Progress and Prize Equity

The 2026 Tour de France Femmes is set to begin on August 1 in Lausanne, Switzerland, and will conclude on August 9 in Nice, France. This event not only highlights the competitive spirit of women cyclists but also marks significant milestones in the progress and visibility of women's cycling, according to Marion Rousse, the race director.

Rousse reflects on the evolution of the sport since its revival in 2022, emphasizing how the Tour de France Femmes has become a crucial platform for elevating women's cycling. She recalls personal experiences from a time when female cyclists received little pay and media attention, saying, "I knew cycling at a time when I wasn't paid, we slept in schools and barracks, and no one talked about us." Rousse celebrates the transformation, noting that the race has attracted a growing fanbase, highlighted by the 8 million viewers who watched Pauline Ferrand-Prévot's victory last year on France Télévisions. "Before, when you turned on the TV and saw a girl on a bike, it was a curiosity. Now, it's normal," she adds.

Financially, the 2026 edition offers a total prize fund of €265,496, unchanged from 2025. The general classification awards €50,000 to the winner, €25,000 for second place, and €10,000 for third, with amounts decreasing to €1,000 for 20th place. Each stage winner earns €4,000, and prizes are also allocated for points, mountain, and young riders’ classifications, with first-place prizes in those categories set at €3,000. The prize structure reflects efforts to fairly reward performance across various aspects of the race.
