Bagnères-de-Bigorre's Thermal Baths and Casino Drive Local Economy Amid Strategic Debates

The municipal council of Bagnères-de-Bigorre recently debated the Grands Thermes’ membership in the association of thermal stations in the Hautes-Pyrénées, a move aimed at uniting the region's seven thermal stations under a single brand to enhance competitiveness. Mayor Nicole Darrieutort emphasized the importance of this unity to counteract challenges like reduced thermal cure reimbursements, rising fuel costs impacting visitor numbers, and intense regional competition. Opposition member Sébastien Lacrampe voiced concerns about potential risks for Bagnères, which currently boasts the best results among the stations, suggesting the town should maintain its autonomy. However, the mayor reassured that each station would keep its independence, with the association focusing primarily on joint communication rather than financial entanglements. The council voted in favor of membership, despite five abstentions from opposition members.

Parallelly, the local casino, operating under the public service delegation alongside the Grands Thermes, reported strong financial health, contributing over €438,000 to the municipality despite a recent deficit of €57,000. The casino has committed to modernizing its facilities and maintaining high-quality services while continuing to support local associations. These tourism assets remain pillars of Bagnères-de-Bigorre’s economy, reinforcing the town’s economic stability and development prospects amid evolving market conditions.
