Benoît Payan, the incumbent mayor of Marseille, has officially announced his candidacy for a second term in the upcoming municipal elections slated for March 15 and 22, 2026. Representing the left coalition known as Printemps marseillais—which comprises socialists, communists, and ecologists—Payan emphasized his administration's achievements while acknowledging ongoing challenges.

Payan succeeded Michèle Rubirola, an ecologist, in 2020 and has since worked to improve the city in multiple areas. His campaign launch marked a departure from the previous collective approach of the Printemps marseillais, with Payan adopting a more individual tone in a letter to Marseille residents and a press conference. He highlighted accomplishments such as a significant reduction in municipal debt, ecological progress, enhanced education and social services, and bolstered security through doubling the municipal police force. Additionally, over 5,000 substandard housing units have been rehabilitated under his leadership, alongside the creation of 525 emergency shelter spaces.

Despite these strides, Payan remains candid about the work ahead, stating there are "still many important tasks to complete." He described Marseille as "more just, greener, and stronger" today, reflecting the progress made during his term.

The election will be fiercely contested. Payan faces opponents including Sébastien Delogu from La France Insoumise, Martine Vassal—a right-center candidate making a second bid after her previous defeat—and Franck Allisio from the National Rally, supported by Marine Le Pen, who plans a campaign event in Marseille. Recent polls show a tight race mainly among Payan, Vassal, and Allisio, often within the margin of error, which may prompt strategic alliances or candidate withdrawals.

Payan’s campaign launch positions him as a central figure in one of France’s major municipal elections, highlighting firm achievements and a pragmatic outlook toward the city’s future development.
