Bruno Le Maire Proposes Federation of Six Key EU Economies to Boost Political and Economic Power

Bruno Le Maire, former French Economy Minister, has unveiled a detailed proposal for a Federation uniting six major European economies: France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland, and the Netherlands. This initiative aims to forge a sovereign, politically integrated economic bloc within the EU framework while allowing the member nations to maintain national sovereignty.

According to Le Maire, the Federation would function as a single entity in strategic areas such as artificial intelligence, economic policies, and financial markets. It would have its own Constitution and shared decision-making rules, positioning it as a powerful 'core Europe' that can exert considerable influence within the broader EU, which currently comprises 27 member states. Le Maire criticizes the current EU structure as a 'monstrous technocracy' that hampers effective governance and decision-making.

The federation also plans to bolster European industry through protective tariffs against heavily subsidized non-European goods and enforce minimum shares of European components in high-tech products. Enhanced cooperation on defense and technology between France and Germany is emphasized, potentially supported by new European debt issuances to finance these efforts.

Le Maire argues that France alone faces stagnation with roughly 1% growth and nearly 8% unemployment and is too small to dominate global affairs. With shifting international alliances, especially a fragile relationship with the US, he stresses the urgency of European sovereignty and technological independence.

Le Maire's manifesto, titled 'L'An I manifeste pour une autre France,' outlines a vision where this six-nation Federation acts as a political and economic powerhouse capable of shaping Europe's future trajectory within and beyond the EU.
