Crans-Montana Fire Death Toll Rises to 41 as Investigation Unfolds

The tragic fire at the Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, has claimed its 41st victim following the death of an 18-year-old Swiss man from his injuries, announced by the Valais district attorney. The victim passed away on January 31 in a Zurich hospital, marking another somber development in this devastating event that occurred on January 1, 2026.

The fire, primarily affecting adolescents and young adults, erupted due to sparks from decorative 'fountain' candles igniting soundproofing foam in the bar's basement. A total of 115 individuals were injured, including 67 Swiss, 21 French, 10 Italians, and 4 Serbs, highlighting the international impact of the tragedy near the French border.

Authorities have launched a thorough judicial investigation focusing on the fire's cause, compliance with safety regulations by the bar owners, and the responsibilities of local authorities. Notably, two local safety officials are under scrutiny for admitting to lapses in mandatory annual fire and safety inspections since 2019.

Further complicating the inquiry, interviews with the bar's owners, Jacques and Jessica Moretti, have revealed contradictions regarding their awareness of safety risks, supported by new internal images of the establishment.

The public prosecutor's office in Valais is collaborating with Italian authorities, enabling cross-border access to evidence as part of the ongoing investigation.

A memorial march honoring the victims has been held, drawing public attention to the profound loss felt within the community. This step underlines the collective grief and commitment to uncovering the full circumstances behind the deadly blaze.
