Dominique de Villepin Launches 'La France humaniste' Political Party Ahead of 2027 Elections

Dominique de Villepin, the former Prime Minister of France, has officially announced the launch of his new political party, 'La France humaniste'. This initiative comes as he prepares for the upcoming presidential elections in 2027, signifying a notable re-entry into the political scene. In a recent interview, Villepin described the party as a 'movement of ideas and citizens,' highlighting its commitment to openness and inclusivity, with the establishment of several local branches already underway.

Villepin's primary aim with 'La France humaniste' is to unite the French populace under a banner that promotes social justice and upholds republican order. He has expressed strong criticism of the current political landscape, which he characterizes as suffering from 'permanent escalation' of tension, and seeks to provide a balanced alternative to the radical divides presented by other parties like La France Insoumise (LFI) and the National Rally (RN).

At the age of 71, Villepin is determined to restore the presidential function as a role of arbiter and inspirer for the nation, moving away from extremes of both security and budgetary concerns. During his announcement, he specifically took aim at current Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, suggesting a need for focus on national security responsibilities, particularly regarding Algeria.

Villepin is confident in his ability to secure the required 500 signatures to enable his presidential candidacy, with indications of significant backing already received. The party will be led by Benoît Jimenez, the mayor of Garges-lès-Gonesse. As they progress, the summer months will be dedicated to further organizing and positioning the party for the upcoming electoral challenges.
