Economic Crisis Deepens for Gironde Entrepreneurs as Wildfire Recovery Efforts Intensify

On August 5, Bruno Lafon, mayor of Biganos and president of the DFCI, convened a crucial meeting to address the mounting economic crisis caused by the recent wildfires in Gironde. The meeting included representatives from the Chamber of Commerce and the Chamber of Trades who discussed the establishment of a crisis cell to manage the economic repercussions. With many local businesses reporting revenue drops between 60% and 80%, the call for government intervention is urgent.

Nathalie Laporte, president of the CMA, expressed frustration over the ministry's slow response, indicating ongoing but inconclusive discussions with the Ministry of Finance regarding aid. Stéphane Loniewski from the CCI highlighted the importance of implementing partial unemployment support for all affected businesses, as even those still operating faced significant losses. Additionally, concerns were raised about whether insurance would adequately cover the extensive damages sustained by these companies.

Mayor Lafon underscored the importance of immediate and effective actions to prevent a negative end to the economic season, recalling the tragic consequences in Spain where delayed evacuations resulted in 12 fatalities. The crisis cell’s work is seen as the beginning of substantial recovery efforts, requiring proactive communication and strong support measures to revive the local economy.
