Key Points

  • • The EU suspended retaliatory tariffs against the US after a trade agreement with Trump.
  • • A 15% tariff on European products entering the US will take effect on August 7, 2025.
  • • The EU had prepared a list of US products worth €93 billion for potential tariffs if no agreement was reached.
  • • EU officials warned that they could reactivate tariffs if trade relations worsen.

On August 5, 2025, the European Union officially suspended its retaliatory tariffs against the United States due to a trade agreement finalized with former President Donald Trump at the end of July. Under the agreement, a 15% tariff will be imposed on European products entering the US, starting August 7, 2025, thus alleviating significant trade tensions between the two economic powers.

Prior to this agreement, the EU had prepared a comprehensive list of US goods, valued at 93 billion euros, including key products like soybeans, airplanes, and cars. These goods would have faced tariffs had negotiations not been successful. Olof Gill, a spokesperson for the European Commission, reaffirmed that the necessary legal steps for suspending the countermeasures had been completed.

Despite the suspension, EU officials have emphasized that the option to reinstate these measures remains, should the trade relationship with the Trump administration deteriorate. A European official noted, "We are putting these measures on hold, but we can always bring them back out." Furthermore, discussions are continuing at a diplomatic level, with the President of Switzerland and the Minister of Economy preparing to negotiate in Washington.

This development marks a notable shift in EU-US trade relations, which had been contentious in recent years due to tariffs and trade disputes.
