Exciting Highlights from the 2025 French Athletics Championships

The 2025 French Athletics Championships, held on August 2 and 3 in Talence, showcased remarkable performances from top French athletes across various events. Just Kwaou-Mathey emerged as a standout, claiming his first national title in the 110m hurdles with an impressive time of 12.99 seconds, the second-fastest mark globally this year. This performance highlights his potential as he competes for a spot on the podium at the upcoming World Championships. Defending champion Sasha Zhoya closely followed Kwaou-Mathey, finishing in 13.18 seconds, while world vice-champion Wilhem Belocian took third at 13.23 seconds. Notably, Pascal Martinot-Lagarde concluded his professional career with a heartfelt final race, finishing seventh.

In pole vault, the legendary Renaud Lavillenie, now 39, returned to form, winning his first French championship since 2020 by clearing 5.82 meters on his initial attempt. Lavillenie expressed relief and joy, stating, "It’s a real joy to have won—this victory proves I can still compete at a high level."

Azzedine Habz also made headlines by winning the 1500m final with a record-setting time of 3:33.33, solidifying his status as a favorite for the World Championships. Meanwhile, in triple jump, Melvin Raffin surpassed expectations by vaulting 17.52 meters, marking the second-best performance worldwide this season.

In the hammer throw, Rose Loga narrowly defended her title with a throw of 67.71 meters, only 10 centimeters ahead of Florella Freyche, despite her performance being below her season-best of 73.17 meters. Loga must now aim to achieve the qualifying mark for the World Championships, currently set at 73.22 meters.

Additionally, Jules Pommery's silver medal in long jump, with a leap of 8.05 meters, puts him within reach of the qualifying standard for the World Championships as he has 20 days to achieve the required 8.21 meters.
