Fabien Roussel Officially Launches Candidacy for 2027 French Presidential Election

Fabien Roussel, the national secretary of the French Communist Party (PCF) and mayor of Saint-Amand-les-Eaux, officially confirmed his candidacy for the 2027 presidential election on September 6 during a TF1 broadcast. His bid was strongly supported within his party, with 72% of PCF militants voting in favor. Despite facing internal dissent with 22% opposing his candidacy, Roussel remains committed to presenting a radical communist agenda centered on economic reforms and a "project of rupture."

Roussel aims to address the economic struggles of the French population by advocating for increased purchasing power, a strong climate plan, and the reindustrialization of France. His campaign emphasizes living well through well-paid work and a commitment to boosting both nuclear and renewable energy production. He has also pledged to tackle tax fraud with strict penalties and to engage with the government on budget issues, emphasizing the need to avoid sacrifices affecting retirees and sick individuals.

Acknowledging the challenges the left faces, Roussel stressed that the issue is not the number of candidates but the left's inability to form a majority. He explicitly mentioned not intending to detract from other left candidates, including Jean-Luc Mélenchon of La France insoumise (LFI). However, his 2022 presidential run, where he secured only 2.28% of the vote, drew criticism from LFI, which accused him of hindering Mélenchon's chances of advancing to the run-off.

As he embarks on this campaign, Roussel plans to broaden the left's base and revitalize its presence in French politics. A key upcoming milestone for him will be addressing the Fête de l’Humanité from September 11-13, a significant event for his party.

Fabien Roussel, 57, has experienced setbacks, including losing his parliamentary seat to the National Rally in 2024, but he remains determined to make the left a majority force once again through his candidacy and programmatic proposals targeting economic renewal and social justice.
