Five Arrested in Antiterrorism Investigation Over Murder of Christian Iraqi in Lyon

Police in Lyon have placed five individuals under custody on October 16 in connection to the murder of Ashur Sarnaya, a 45-year-old Christian Iraqi man killed in Lyon on September 10. The investigation, now managed by the Paris antiterrorism unit, links these arrests to a 28-year-old Algerian man detained in Italy on October 2, who is suspected of being involved in the crime and is subject to a European arrest warrant for premeditated murder. These arrests come after extensive technical investigations at the crime scene.

Ashur Sarnaya, who was in a wheelchair, was stabbed in the throat while streaming live on TikTok, where he actively shared his Christian faith. His sister and members of the Christian community suggest that the murder was motivated by anti-Christian sentiment, noting that some of Ashur's videos were reported by users identified as Muslim. Ashur and his sister fled Iraq in 2014 amid religious threats, subsequently being granted asylum in France in 2016.

The Parisian antiterrorism judges took over the case on October 13, with interrogations now conducted by the anti-terrorism sub-directorate (SDAT). Support for Ashur's family has been expressed by the Lyon diocese, which condemned the violence related to religious faith that led to this tragic death.

This significant development underlines the serious nature of the crime, now treated as an assassination linked to a terrorist enterprise, marking a critical juncture in the investigation and highlighting concerns about faith-based violence within France.
