France Aims for 18 Medals at 2026 Winter Paralympics Amid Opening Ceremony Boycott

As the 2026 Winter Paralympics commence in Milan-Cortina, France has set an ambitious target of winning 18 medals, a 50% increase from the 12 medals they secured at the last Games in Beijing. French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari expressed strong confidence in the delegation of 17 athletes, all considered potential medalists, underscoring the goal to remain within the top five nations in the medal standings.

The French government has decided to boycott the opening ceremony in protest against the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes, who have been allowed to compete under their own flags for the first time since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Along with six other countries, France's absence intends to express firm disapproval of Russia's aggressive actions without withdrawing the athletes from competition. Ferrari clarified that French athletes will still compete fully and be supported during the Games, with volunteers representing them during ceremonies.

Marie-Amélie Le Fur, president of the French Paralympic Committee, leads the delegation and reinforces the commitment to excel despite political tensions. Ferrari emphasized the importance of these Games as a platform for inspiring people with disabilities to engage in sports.

While addressing broader organizational concerns, Ferrari acknowledged a delay of about a month and a half in preparations for the 2030 Winter Olympics and Paralympics in the French Alps, calling for efficient governance but remaining optimistic about France’s ability to host the event successfully.
