France and US Resolve Diplomatic Standoff, Approve New French Ambassador to Washington

After several weeks of diplomatic tension, Aurélien Lechevallier has received approval from the United States to become the new French ambassador to Washington, ending a blockage that began in late July. The dispute arose following a tweet from France's mission to the United Nations in Geneva criticizing US human rights practices, stating that the US was once a model but no longer is. This led the US to walk out of a UN Security Council meeting and block Lechevallier's nomination as a form of political reprisal.

Following negotiations, the French mission clarified that the disagreement concerned a single vote rather than the broader issue of human rights, a statement welcomed by the US State Department which then allowed the approval process to proceed. Aurélien Lechevallier, currently the chief of staff to French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, is expected to assume his post in Washington in the coming weeks. In the meantime, Laurent Bili will continue in his ambassadorial role until Lechevallier's arrival.
