France Boosts Nuclear and Defensive Cooperation with Europe Amid Middle East Tensions

In response to escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly following recent Iranian military actions, France is significantly enhancing its European defense and nuclear cooperation. During a March 2 defense council meeting, French President Emmanuel Macron announced an increased defensive posture for France, emphasizing solidarity with European allies. He introduced a new concept of 'advanced deterrence' aimed at strengthening France's strategic defense capabilities, including plans to increase the number of French nuclear warheads.

Simultaneously, France and Germany have underscored their commitment to deepening nuclear deterrence cooperation. A high-level nuclear steering group has been established to coordinate doctrinal dialogue, strategic cooperation, and joint operations such as Germany's participation in French nuclear exercises. This collaboration focuses on integrating conventional military capabilities and missile defense while reaffirming the importance of nuclear deterrence as a cornerstone of European security. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot spoke out against unilateral military escalations in the region by Israel and the US, calling for a halt to hostilities and urging Iran to engage in negotiations. He confirmed France's readiness to defend Gulf countries and Jordan, which have been targets of Iranian strikes, in alignment with collective defense agreements. Barrot also reassured that no French casualties have been reported so far among the approximately 400,000 French nationals in the region.
