France Continues Vaccination and Restrictions to Combat Contagious Bovine Nodular Dermatitis in 2026

Since the first detection of Contagious Bovine Nodular Dermatitis (DNC) in France on June 29, 2025, the country has recorded a total of 117 outbreaks across regions including Savoie (32) and Haute-Savoie (44). Notably, no new outbreaks have been reported since January 2, 2026, reflecting effective containment efforts.

In response, French authorities have implemented rigorous control measures such as mandatory mass vaccination of all bovines within regulated zones, fully funded by the state. These zones include surveillance areas extending 50 kilometers and protection areas extending 20 kilometers from outbreak sites, with strict restrictions on bovine movement to prevent further disease spread.

Vaccination efforts will continue through 2026 in identified risk zones, requiring bovines from disease-free regions to be vaccinated upon entry. Movement within vaccination zones is allowed after a 28-day post-vaccination period and health certification. Additionally, controlled export of vaccinated bovines to countries like Italy, Switzerland, and Spain has resumed, with ongoing negotiations to expand export agreements.

Authorities emphasize the importance of early detection and reporting by farmers to veterinarians to maintain control over the disease. Maps and lists of eligible communes for vaccination and export are regularly updated as campaigns progress.

These measures aim to manage and eventually eradicate DNC in France, safeguarding the health of bovine populations and agricultural interests.
