France Faces Heightened Hybrid Warfare Threats Amid Political Tensions and Legal Actions Against Far-Right Disruptions

France's internal security landscape is marked by escalating political tensions and growing concerns over hybrid warfare threats. On August 26, eight members of the far-right identitarian group Nouvelle droite faced tribunal hearings in Lille, charged with disrupting a March meeting of the left-wing political group La France Insoumise (LFI) regarding municipal elections. The disruption involved confrontations with fake blood, scuffles, and flour throwing. Authorities sought eighteen months of probationary prison sentences for those involved, underscoring the political discord currently unfolding in the country.

Concurrently, France's General Director of Internal Security (DGSI), Céline Berthon, issued a stark warning about the evolving hybrid warfare threats facing the nation. Speaking at a Medef-organized debate, Berthon highlighted recent events in Germany, where explosive drones were discovered at Leipzig Airport. Two of these drones targeted Ukrainian cargo planes, with one hitting a DHL cargo aircraft and another found in a nearby field.

These incidents signal an escalation in hybrid warfare tactics, often attributed to Russia, which France must prepare to confront domestically. Berthon emphasized that France's defense sector, its entire industrial and technological supply chain (BITD), as well as critical sectors such as energy and communications, are potential targets for more direct and violent hostile actions on French soil. Although prior incidents in France involving drones over sensitive military sites have not been conclusively linked to Russia, today's warning reflects heightened alertness to such threats.
