France Faces Intensifying Heatwave with Orange Alert Issued in Bouches-du-Rhône

France is preparing for a significant heatwave this week, with temperatures soaring across most of the country. According to MeteoConsult, an intense heatwave is expected to grip France from Tuesday onwards, spreading broadly by Wednesday. Maximum temperatures are forecasted to reach between 35°C and 39°C, with nighttime temperatures rising as well, making nights increasingly warm. This heatwave is projected to persist through at least Friday, potentially extending into Saturday depending on the region. Early in the week, about three-quarters of France will record afternoon temperatures ranging from 32°C to 37°C.

The Bouches-du-Rhône department has been specifically highlighted for heatwave severity. On August 10, starting at noon, the region will shift from a yellow to an orange heatwave alert. Minimum temperatures will range from 21°C to 23°C along the coast and between 19°C and 21°C inland. Maximum daytime temperatures are expected to reach around 35°C near the Etang de Berre and Marseille and may climb to 38°C in areas such as Durance and Pays d'Aix.

The prefect of Bouches-du-Rhône has issued recommendations urging residents to take protective measures. These include keeping homes cool by closing windows and shutters during the day and airing out rooms at night when cooler, drinking water regularly to stay hydrated, and spending two to three hours daily in cool environments. Special attention is advised for vulnerable groups, such as infants, young children, and elderly individuals, as they face higher risks of dehydration and heat-related complications. The prefect also highlighted the importance of consulting a medical professional if anyone feels unwell and maintaining contact with family and neighbors for mutual support during the heatwave.

This evolving heat situation underscores the urgency for inhabitants across France, particularly in the southern regions like Bouches-du-Rhône, to remain vigilant and implement recommended safety measures to mitigate the health risks posed by this severe and prolonged heatwave.
