He criticized the retreat as succumbing to the "blackmail" of the Front de libération nationale kanak et socialiste (FLNKS), lamenting a series of setbacks since May 2024. These include the abandonment of electoral reform proposals and an independence-association plan, despite three referendums held.

The political atmosphere in New Caledonia remains fraught following violent incidents in 2024 related to electoral reforms, reflecting deep fractures between Loyalists and pro-independence groups.
