France Heightens Military Readiness Amid Iran Conflict, Pledges Defense Support to Gulf States

France is intensifying its military posture in response to escalating hostilities in the Middle East linked to Iran. President Emmanuel Macron announced during a March 1 defense council meeting that France would "raise its posture" to adapt to recent developments. A joint statement from France, the UK, and Germany underscored readiness for "proportional defensive actions," specifically targeting Iran's missile and drone capabilities.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot emphasized France's commitment to supporting Gulf States and Jordan, who have become embroiled in the conflict due to Iranian missile and drone strikes. He stated that France is prepared to participate in their defense under collective agreements covering countries such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Iraq, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, and Jordan. Currently, around 400,000 French nationals are in these regions with no casualties reported, and France has implemented measures to facilitate safe evacuations if necessary.

Desportes noted contrasting public perspectives, with strong Israeli backing for aggressive action contrasting with widespread American opposition, particularly within former President Trump's supporters. He cautioned skepticism about expectations of regime change through bombing, citing historical instances where such interventions have failed to achieve quick political success.

Meanwhile, across France, numerous gatherings of the Iranian diaspora have taken place, expressing a mix of hope and fear. The recent death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has triggered celebrations among some, signaling aspirations for change after nearly five decades of the Islamic Republic, although many remain deeply concerned for family members in Iran and the possibility of violent outcomes.

France's response balances military readiness and humanitarian considerations amid an increasingly complex and volatile regional conflict.
