France Leads Emergency European Football Meeting Against FIFA's Commercialization Plan

The French government has announced an emergency meeting of European football bodies in response to FIFA's controversial proposal to create a new commercial entity, FIFA Forward Enterprise (FEE). The proposal aims to manage FIFA's commercial activities and attract external private investments potentially worth $10 billion, intended to support football development globally.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has set a deadline of September 19, 2026, for football federations worldwide to respond to this initiative, with plans to implement the proposal starting January 1, 2027. Each member federation participating could receive $20 million, according to Infantino’s recent letter, which also states the plan will proceed "without ceding control of any kind."

However, the plan has drawn strong criticism across Europe. French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari emphasized the need for a unified European voice to address how this project could fundamentally alter football's balance. The European Union voiced opposition to the commercialization, with Commissioner Glenn Micallef describing rampant commercialization as harmful and threatening football's popularity.

The French Football Federation President, Philippe Diallo, called for more transparency and consultation, condemning the lack of prior dialogue with national federations. Both the English and German football federations expressed concerns, with Germany labeling the proposal an "absolute attack on football." Moreover, confederations from North America and Asia also regretted being excluded from initial discussions before the public announcement.

UEFA criticized FIFA for exploiting football for profit, insisting on responsible development that prioritizes federations, clubs, players, and supporters rather than commercial gains.

The emergency meeting organized by France aims to coordinate a strong European response as FIFA pushes forward with its plan despite mounting opposition over governance, transparency, and the commercialization of the sport.
