France Names New Aircraft Carrier 'France Libre' to Honor General de Gaulle's Spirit of Resistance

France has officially named its forthcoming aircraft carrier 'France Libre,' a decision announced by President Emmanuel Macron during a visit to the Naval Group construction site near Nantes. The new carrier, expected to replace the Charles de Gaulle by 2038, will be a 310-meter-long vessel costing around 10 billion euros with an anticipated construction period of 12 years.

The choice of name pays homage to the Free France resistance movement founded by General Charles de Gaulle in London during World War II, reflecting a broader concept of French identity and resilience rather than simply honoring a historical figure. Macron expressed his desire to "inscribe our future aircraft carrier in the lineage of General de Gaulle," highlighting the general's life and legacy as embodying an ''idea of France.''

The naming decision was made by Macron around Christmas, following consultations with his military chief of staff and was carefully kept within a small circle before the public announcement. Prior to confirming 'France Libre,' other prominent historical names such as Richelieu, Jeanne d'Arc, and Jean Moulin had been speculated upon, particularly as this year marks the 400th anniversary of the French Navy.
