France Records Its Hottest Day and Night in History Amid Intense Heatwave

On June 23, 2026, France experienced an unprecedented heatwave, marking the hottest day since temperature measurements began in 1947. The national thermal average reached 29.8°C, surpassing the previous highs of 29.4°C recorded in July 2019 and August 2003. This historic heat was most intense in western regions, where several absolute temperature records fell, including 43.3°C in Cazaux, 42.2°C in Niort, and 42.1°C in Bordeaux.

The night preceding this record-breaking day was equally notable, registering the warmest night ever recorded in France with a minimum national average temperature of 21.6°C. This exceptional nocturnal heat highlighted the severity of the current climatic event.

Météo-France has alerted that these extreme temperatures will persist throughout the weekend, with expected daytime highs between 40°C and 42°C and nighttime minimums climbing between 23°C and 28°C. As a result, 58 departments are under red alert, and 31 others under orange alert for the ongoing heatwave.

The repercussions on daily life have been significant: the French education ministry reported that over 8,000 schools, colleges, and high schools are affected, with roughly 1,800 closures to safeguard students.

Tragically, since June 18, there have been 40 drowning fatalities, predominantly among the youth, along with heat-related deaths involving children and elderly individuals.

The frequency of heatwaves in France has increased dramatically in recent years, with over half of the 52 recorded since 1947 occurring in the past 15 years.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for urgent climate action in light of such extreme events, emphasizing the critical need to address the global climate crisis. Meanwhile, disruptions extend beyond France, as multiple European countries, including the UK, Italy, and Spain, face rare and potentially record-breaking heat levels.
