France has solidified its position as a global leader in generative artificial intelligence (AI) adoption, ranking fifth worldwide with nearly 47.8% of its working-age population actively using generative AI tools, according to Microsoft's latest AI Economy Institute report released in May 2026. This marks a significant increase from previous quarters and places France ahead of many major economies, including the United States, which ranks 21st with 31.3% adoption.

The global landscape for generative AI adoption is rapidly evolving, with 17.8% of the global working population utilizing such tools, up from 16.3% at the end of 2025. While Northern countries experience faster growth in AI adoption (+2.8 percentage points) compared to Southern countries (+1.3 points), structural factors such as digital infrastructure, language support, and public policies play a crucial role in these regional differences. Asia emerges as a significant growth engine in AI adoption, with countries like South Korea, Thailand, and Japan showing impressive increases of 43%, 36%, and 34%, respectively, since mid-2025. Meanwhile, the UAE tops the global rankings, propelled by strategic investments including a $15 billion commitment from Microsoft, demonstrating the impact of targeted AI partnerships.
