France's Industrial Output Slows While Occitanie Region Shows Strong Growth in 2025

France experienced a surprising 0.7% decline in industrial production in February 2026, contradicting analyst expectations of stability. This marks a setback following a revised modest 0.2% increase in January, signaling concerns over the country's overall industrial performance.

Despite the national slowdown, the Occitanie region demonstrated remarkable industrial resilience in 2025. It recorded 10 net new factory openings, the highest among French regions, outperforming Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Île-de-France. Occitanie's industrial base maintained strength with 26 new industrial sites launched against 16 closures, notably in sectors including agro-food and consumer goods.

The region's dynamic growth aligns with President Emmanuel Macron's reindustrialization goals to boost the industrial sector's GDP contribution from 10% to 15% by 2030. Key projects enhancing this trend include Framacold's facility for refrigerant fluid regeneration, Air Support's energy-positive building expansion, and Microphyt's microalgae industrial bioraffinery.

Additionally, the France 2030 plan’s 'Première Usine' initiative selected three Occitanie companies for funding: Cykero, aiming to open a cutting-edge reconditioning factory in Montpellier by December 2026 with significant job creation targets; Mecano ID, expanding with a new 10,000 m² site targeting the launcher market; and Water Horizon, developing thermal batteries to boost energy efficiency.

While the national industrial sector faces headwinds, Occitanie's distinct growth trajectory highlights regional strength and innovation driving France's reindustrialization efforts forward.
