François Bayrou's Resounding Defense at MoDem's Summer University

François Bayrou delivered a compelling defense of his political record during the MoDem's summer university event in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, marking his first public address since leaving Matignon on September 8. Held from September 26 to 28, this year's gathering was notable for being the first outside Guidel since 2012 due to logistical issues. Bayrou acknowledged the widespread concerns among party members regarding his successor, Sébastien Lecornu, stating that the leadership transition has not been entirely reassuring.

Bayrou stressed the pressing concerns over public finances and the overall political crisis that his successor faces. Despite extending his support to Lecornu, he noted the distinct apprehensions among centrist members about the future direction of the government, particularly following Lecornu’s recent interview, which left many skeptical about his approach to coalition politics with the socialists.

Jules Pasquier, president of the young democrats, voiced the party's unease, labeling the situation as 'mal embarqué' or poorly embarked, indicative of the doubts surrounding Lecornu's leadership. Bayrou's address underscored the ongoing debates within the party as they navigate the challenges ahead in a politically fragmented landscape.
