French Business Climate Continues to Strengthen in August 2026

The business climate in France improved slightly in August 2026, marking the third consecutive month of growth according to the latest Insee data. The key indicator rose by one point to 98, edging closer to the long-term average of 100. This positive trend follows readings of 94 for both May and June, and 97 in July, signaling recovery across key sectors.

Sector-wise, the industrial sector saw a two-point increase, climbing from 101 to 103, driven by positive expectations for production. The service sector grew by one point to reach 100, with anticipated demand for services contributing to the momentum. Retail commerce showed the strongest gain with a three-point rise to 99, attributed to increased order intentions and improved past sales figures. Conversely, the building sector remained the weakest with a stable indicator at 96.

Meanwhile, the employment climate remained stable at 99 after a revision upward from 98 in July, pointing to steady employment expectations. This marks a significant rebound from the low of 92 in May 2026, recorded during the post-health crisis downturn.

Overall, the data reflects a cautiously optimistic economic environment in France, with gradual improvements apparent across industry, services, and retail, despite ongoing challenges in construction.
