French Regions Boost Local Economies with Sustainability and Circular Economy Initiatives

French local regions Terrassonnais and Serre Chevalier lead economic support and sustainability efforts through dedicated funding, ecological programs, and circular economy practices.

    Key details

  • • Terrassonnais Haut Périgord noir supported 95 companies with nearly 500,000 euros since 2022, with a 98% sustainability rate.
  • • The Soirée de l’économie awarded three local business trophies and introduced the ecological transition program Éco Défis.
  • • Serre Chevalier produces 34% of energy needs from renewables and implements circular economy policies focusing on reuse and recycling.
  • • Serre Chevalier repurposes materials and retrofits infrastructure to reduce emissions and promote sustainability.

On October 2, the Communauté de communes du Terrassonnais Haut Périgord noir held its second Soirée de l’économie, spotlighting local business achievements and economic collaboration. Since 2022, 95 companies received nearly 500,000 euros in support, with an impressive sustainability rate of 98%. For 2025, 300,000 euros are allocated to continue these efforts. Three economic trophies were awarded to local entrepreneurs recognizing transmission, rural engagement, and tradition. Additionally, the new Éco Défis program was launched to encourage ecological transition among small businesses.

Meanwhile, Serre Chevalier Vallée is advancing sustainability through circular economy policies, producing 34% of its energy needs from renewable sources such as hydroelectricity and photovoltaics. The ski resort prioritizes reducing resource use, repairing goods, and recycling, including repurposing 700 m² of old larch wood and 8,000 m² of geotextiles for community use. The establishment of a resource center and a digital platform supports local collaboration in waste reduction. The resort also focuses on retrofitting old ski lift infrastructure and using alternative fuels, significantly decreasing greenhouse gas emissions.

These initiatives demonstrate a dual approach across French regions—Terrassonnais enhancing local economic support with sustainability in mind and Serre Chevalier pioneering circular economy strategies to reduce environmental impact in tourism.

As Dominique Bousquet, President of the Terrassonnais community, expressed, "The local economy is one big family. We must gather, exchange, and create bridges among those who sustain the territory." Both regions exemplify how local economies and environmental responsibility can progress hand in hand.
