French Right-Wing Reacts Strongly to 2026 Migrant Influx in Spanish Enclaves

A recent surge of migrants entering the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco has ignited intense political debate across Europe, notably within France. Hundreds of migrants crossed the borders illegally, marking the most significant wave of migration into the EU since 2021. Tragically, this influx has resulted in the deaths of nine migrants, underscoring the human toll of the crisis.

French right-wing leaders have vocally criticized Spain's handling of the situation. Bruno Retailleau, president of the Republicans, warned of a "migratory call effect" stemming from Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's policies, particularly highlighting previous migrant regularizations that may have contributed to this surge. Retailleau expressed concern that Spain’s approach could trigger broader migration pressures affecting all of Europe.

Marine Le Pen, leader of the National Rally, echoed calls for urgent action, advocating for immediate reinforcement of France’s border controls. She proposed that by 2027, the Schengen Agreement should be revised to allow free movement exclusively for EU nationals, effectively tightening external borders.

Taking a firmer stance, Nicolas Dupont-Aignan, president of Debout La France, suggested that France must consider exiting the European Union altogether to reclaim sovereign control over its borders and prevent what he termed an "invasion."

The crisis has also sparked diplomatic tensions beyond France. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni indicated willingness to suspend Spain from the Schengen zone in response to the ongoing influx, labeling the situation a crisis. Spanish Foreign Minister José Luis Albares condemned Meloni’s comments as demagogic and summoned the Italian ambassador in protest, reflecting strains within EU member relations.

The Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla remain among the few direct land access points to Europe from Africa, making them focal points for migratory flows and heightened political friction among EU countries. This latest wave not only highlights ongoing challenges over border security and migration management but also exposes deep divisions over the future of EU cooperation on these issues.
