French Swimmers Shine with Multiple Medals at 2026 European Swimming Championships

At the 2026 European Swimming Championships held in Saint-Denis, French swimmers delivered outstanding performances, capturing multiple medals and setting impressive times that underscore their rising dominance in European aquatic sports.

Léon Marchand secured his first individual European title by winning the gold medal in the 200 meters butterfly with a remarkable time of 1:51.72, the fastest world performance of the year in this event. Marchand finished over two seconds ahead of Hungarian Richard Marton and Greek Apostolos Siskos, marking a significant triumph following his earlier silver medal in the men's 4x200 meters freestyle relay. Despite an injury a month prior, Marchand expressed satisfaction with his performance and revealed plans to compete next in the 400 meters freestyle, an event new to his championship career.

In women's events, Mary-Ambre Moluh won the gold medal in the 100 meters backstroke, breaking her own European record with a time of 57.94 seconds. This victory was France’s third gold at the championships and followed her success in the mixed 4x100 meters relay. Moluh acknowledged feeling stressed but was optimistic about her form heading toward the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. Fellow French swimmer Pauline Mahieu also excelled in the 100 meters backstroke, earning bronze with a time of 58.77 seconds. Both athletes expressed pride in sharing the podium.

On the men's side, compatriots Mewen Tomac and Yohann Ndoye Brouard reached the 100 meters backstroke final, securing the top two spots in their semifinal heat, highlighting France's depth in this stroke.

While French swimmers shone, German swimmer Johannes Liebmann made headlines by breaking the world record in the men's 1500 meters freestyle with a time of 14:26.79, surpassing the previous record held by American Bobby Finke.
