Gironde Region Joins France’s Intensifying Heatwave with Orange Alert

France is currently enduring a severe heatwave under a vast anticyclone affecting Western Europe, with temperatures soaring across the country. As of Monday, July 6, the Gironde department has been placed on an orange heatwave alert due to predicted highs reaching 38 to 39°C on Monday and exceeding 40°C by Tuesday. Nighttime temperatures in the region will remain elevated, between 20 and 22°C. The Prefect of Gironde has alerted all mayors and emergency services, placing them on pre-alert status to coordinate preventive measures, particularly for vulnerable groups such as the elderly and those with chronic illnesses.

This heatwave, impacting 13 departments in orange alert and 24 in yellow, is set to intensify and spread from the southwest to central France, with temperatures expected between 37°C and 41°C and persisting until around July 15. Heightened dryness exacerbates wildfire risks and air quality deterioration due to rising ozone levels.
