Gironde Wildfire Containment Confirmed; Fire Spread Halts After Burning 42,000 Hectares

The massive wildfire in Gironde, France, which has ravaged 42,000 hectares over ten days, is now officially "fixed" and no longer progressing, according to Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez. This positive development follows extensive firefighting efforts involving hundreds of firefighters and civilian volunteers.

Early reports on Saturday morning indicated the fire was "still contained" but not yet "fixed," as communicated by firefighters' representatives. However, by later in the day, authorities confirmed the blaze's spread had halted, marking a significant step forward in managing the crisis.

While the Gironde fire has stabilized, the Var region continues to battle an active wildfire in the Gros Bessillon area, which has consumed approximately 1,250 hectares since its resurgence last Friday.

Additionally, rail traffic in Gironde is progressively resuming as conditions improve, signaling a gradual return to normalcy in the affected area.

The concerted efforts of firefighting teams and civilian helpers have been crucial in controlling this megafire, which has posed a severe challenge due to its size and duration.
