Heatwave Forces Multiple French Cities to Cancel Fête de la Musique Events Amid Safety Concerns

France is experiencing a severe heatwave with temperatures approaching 40°C, leading to the cancellation of many Fête de la Musique concerts and events across several cities to protect public safety. According to Météo-France, 26 departments are currently under orange heatwave alert, with the peak of the heat expected on Sunday or Monday.

Brive-la-Gaillarde has cancelled all its planned activities due to the heatwave, while Claye-Souilly suspended all events, citing safety concerns for artists, volunteers, staff, and the public. Smaller towns including Le Teich, Écommoy, and Saint-Savinien-sur-Charente also cancelled their festivities, with local music schools shortening performances to reduce sun exposure risks. In Angers, organizers cancelled one concert and postponed another but maintained the main event, providing fountains and water bars to encourage hydration.

The departments of Bas-Rhin and Corrèze have been placed under orange alerts as well. In Bas-Rhin, temperatures may reach up to 38°C from June 19 onwards. The prefect has activated a monitoring cell coordinating local authorities and state services to protect vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and chronically ill. Municipalities and event organizers are urged to mitigate risks by offering water and shaded spaces. Public advisories emphasize staying hydrated, avoiding alcohol, and taking precautions during peak heat. Employers are recommended to modify outdoor work schedules to protect employees.

Similarly, Corrèze is also under orange alert with expected temperatures between 38°C and 40°C, peaking on Sunday. Measures include active protection and monitoring of vulnerable populations, public awareness campaigns, and encouraging reduced physical activity during the hottest hours.

To assist the public, the government has activated the 'Canicule info service' hotline at 0800 06 66 66, offering advice on staying safe during the heatwave. Health Minister Stéphanie Rist stressed the importance of vigilance and public solidarity throughout this intense weather episode.

This heatwave represents the 52nd since 1947 but marks the increasing frequency and intensity of such events in recent years, largely attributed to climate change. The current situation highlights the direct impact of extreme weather on cultural activities and the necessity of coordinated governmental and local responses to ensure public health and safety during summer events.
