Heatwave in July 2026 Causes 1,243 Excess Deaths Across France, Public Health Officials Report

France recorded 1,243 excess deaths during the July 3-22, 2026 heatwave, with certain regions disproportionately affected and a troubling rise in deaths at home.

    Key details

  • • 1,243 excess deaths occurred in France from July 3 to July 22, 2026 due to a heatwave.
  • • This death toll is four times lower than the previous heatwave in late June 2026.
  • • Pays de la Loire saw a 21.4% increase in deaths, Brittany was also heavily impacted, while Corsica reported no excess deaths.
  • • A significant number of deaths occurred at home, highlighting a concerning public health trend.

Between July 3 and July 22, 2026, France experienced a deadly heatwave that resulted in an estimated 1,243 excess deaths, according to Santé publique France. This figure represents a significant but smaller impact compared to the intense heatwave at the end of June that caused approximately 5,764 excess deaths. Overall, heat-related deaths in France in 2026 have reached about 7,300, which includes 300 from an earlier heatwave in late May.

The excess mortality during this July heatwave accounts for 9.2% more deaths than expected during the period. The regional distribution of deaths revealed that the Pays de la Loire region was severely affected, with 236 additional deaths—an increase of 21.4% over normal figures. Brittany was the third hardest-hit region, recording 152 more deaths than usual. Conversely, Corsica was the only region without excess mortality reported during this time.

Santé publique France noted an especially strong signal regarding deaths occurring at home, highlighting a worrying trend in fatalities outside hospitals or care facilities. The heatwave’s impact was observed across various locales, underscoring the widespread consequences of these extreme temperatures.

Public health authorities emphasize that the notably high temperatures in early July contributed to this increase in mortality. While the link between heat and deaths is clear, the agency also notes that the precise attribution among other causes is still being studied.

This new mortality data, stemming from an extrapolation of data from thousands of communes, underscores the pressing health risks posed by heatwaves and the urgent need for continued monitoring and mitigation efforts against such climate-related public health threats.
