Hugo Ekitike Ruled Out of 2026 World Cup Due to Achilles Injury, Impacting France's Squad

Hugo Ekitike, the 23-year-old Liverpool forward, has suffered a rupture of his right Achilles tendon during the Champions League quarter-final match against Paris Saint-Germain. This serious injury will prevent him from participating in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is scheduled to take place from June 11 to July 19 across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Ekitike's season abruptly ended in the 30th minute of the match, when he collapsed on the field holding his calf and left the pitch in tears. Liverpool's coach, Arne Slot, described the injury as "quite serious" following the game. Further medical examinations are planned to determine the exact severity, whether a partial or complete rupture. The recovery will require several months, ruling him out of the World Cup.

In light of this development, Randal Kolo Muani has emerged as the leading candidate to fill the vacant spot in the French national team, supported by head coach Didier Deschamps. This adjustment comes amid a broader reshuffle of France's squad ahead of the tournament.

Meanwhile, Antoine Griezmann, who retired from international football in 2024 after an acclaimed career with 137 caps, addressed speculation about a possible return to the national squad following Ekitike's injury. Griezmann confirmed in an interview with Canal + that he will not come out of retirement, saying, "I will have my jersey... Probably in the stands with my son. I wish them all the best; for me, they are the number one favorites. I will support them fully." He also revealed plans to continue his club career in Major League Soccer with Orlando.
