Investigation Underway After Firearm Discovery Near Strasbourg Christmas Market Amid Heightened Security

An investigation has been launched following the discovery of a functional pistol and ammunition near Strasbourg's Christmas market, an event that attracts millions annually and has been on high alert since a deadly 2018 terrorist attack. The firearm was found on November 27 by maintenance workers tending bushes close to the 'village de l’avent' in the historic Petite France district, according to Republic Prosecutor Clarisse Taron.

The Strasbourg Christmas market, opened on November 26, is one of France’s largest and drew 3.4 million visitors last year, including many from Germany, the USA, and Spain. Given the persistent terrorist threat in France, authorities have implemented heightened security measures for the month-long event. This intensified security includes real-time drone surveillance and the deployment of 1,000 personnel comprising police, gendarmes, CRS, firefighters, and Red Cross volunteers.

The measures directly respond to the 2018 attack in which jihadist Chérif Chekatt killed five people and injured eleven near the market using a firearm and a knife. Since then, Strasbourg has remained vigilant, particularly for this major event known for its large, dense crowds. Access to the market is controlled during operating hours from 11:30 AM to 9 PM to ensure a rapid response to any potential threats.

This year’s security arrangements closely follow those of the previous year, emphasizing both counter-terrorism readiness and crowd management. The ongoing investigation into the firearm aims to clarify circumstances around its presence and ensure the safety of the event and its visitors.
