Isère Under Orange Heatwave Alert as Temperatures Soar to 40°C

The Isère department has been placed under an official orange heatwave alert starting at noon on July 29, 2026, due to an anticipated heatwave lasting several days with temperatures reaching between 39°C and 40°C. The préfète of Isère has urged local mayors and event organizers to adjust emergency response plans, considering options such as rescheduling or canceling festive and sporting events to ensure public safety.

Residents are warned about various signs of heat-related illness, including fatigue, weakness, headaches, dizziness, nausea, muscle cramps, and elevated body temperature above 38.5°C. Vulnerable groups like the elderly, isolated individuals, and chronically ill people should be closely monitored. The public is encouraged to seek medical assistance if behavioral disturbances occur and can contact emergency medical services at 15 or social emergency services at 115.

This alert coincides with the fourth heatwave of the year sweeping across France after a ten-day lull. While 16 departments across the country are on orange alert, some in the southwest face even higher temperatures up to 42°C amid persistent wildfires. However, forecasts suggest the overall intensity of this heatwave will be less severe and of shorter duration than previous ones, with hopeful cooling thunderstorms expected in some areas. Nonetheless, Isère authorities emphasize vigilance and proactive prevention to protect residents from heat-related dangers during this ongoing heat event.
