Jack Lang Resigns from Institut du Monde Arabe Amid Controversy; Anne-Claire Legendre Proposed as Successor

Jack Lang, who has led the Institut du Monde Arabe (IMA) for thirteen years, is set to officially step down amid an ongoing investigation by the Parquet national financier linked to the Epstein affair. His resignation opens the path for new leadership at the French cultural institution.

On February 16, three candidates were interviewed to succeed Lang, with Anne-Claire Legendre, a seasoned diplomat and current presidential advisor for North Africa and the Middle East, emerging as the frontrunner. Legendre, who previously served as France’s ambassador to Kuwait and as a spokesperson at the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, has been proposed to the IMA's board for approval.

If confirmed, Legendre would become the first woman to lead the IMA. According to Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, she "possesses the necessary experience, qualities, and strategic vision" needed for this critical role. The candidacy reportedly enjoys unanimous support from the board and is expected to be approved without issue.

Lang's departure follows concerns over his legacy arising from the financial probe, making the transition a pivotal moment for the institution, emphasizing continuity with fresh leadership. The board is preparing to formalize the change in the near term, marking an important shift in cultural governance.
