French households experienced a 0.6% rise in consumption in June 2025, notably driven by energy expenses.

    Key details

  • • Household consumption increased by 0.6% in June 2025.
  • • Energy spending surged by 3.5% in June, primarily due to electricity costs.
  • • Manufactured goods consumption rose by 0.5%, with durable goods up by 1.1%.
  • • Food consumption declined by 0.9% in June but saw a 1.7% rise over the second quarter.

In June 2025, French household consumption increased by 0.6% compared to May, according to data from Insee. This growth follows a slight rise of 0.1% in May and marks a recovery in spending, with total consumption of goods up 0.1% in the second quarter of 2025 after a decline earlier in the year.

A significant factor in this uptick was energy spending, which surged by 3.5% in June, building on a 2.1% rise in May. This increase was largely due to higher expenditures on electricity, which rebounded from earlier dips caused by unseasonably mild weather in April. Spending on petroleum products also saw a rebound, rising by 3.7% in June after a previous decline of 3.1% in May.

Additionally, consumption of manufactured goods improved by 0.5% in June, with purchases of durable goods up 1.1%, signaling a positive trend in that sector as well. However, food consumption declined by 0.9% in June, continuing a downward trajectory that had seen a 0.3% drop in May. Despite this, food consumption showed a promising 1.7% increase in the second quarter compared to the first, the largest improvement since late 2020.

Overall, despite some fluctuations in energy and food spending, the recovery in durable goods and increased household consumption indicate a gradual improvement in the economic conditions for French households as of June 2025.
