Labor Crisis Deepens at BHV Amidst Financial Turmoil and Employee Hardship

Employees at BHV, the iconic Parisian department store, are facing severe work conditions as the retailer undergoes a profound financial and operational crisis. According to reports, the store’s revenue has plummeted by 80% over the past year, a downturn driven by the departure of multiple brands due to unpaid bills and a damaging scandal linked to the controversy surrounding the entry of Shein, compounded by earlier issues involving inappropriate products.

Workers, many of whom have neither retired nor resigned, have expressed their distress by reaching out to labor inspectors, who are conducting regular visits to assess employee well-being. A psychological support unit has been established to assist staff, particularly in regional locations where conditions are especially harsh. Employees describe near-empty shelves and a stark absence of customers, which has heightened anxiety and job insecurity among staff.

The crisis is further intensified by service providers halting deliveries due to unpaid invoices, and employees reportedly experiencing payment delays of up to a week. Despite the bleak environment, BHV's management has announced plans to celebrate the store's 170th anniversary this September, a gesture that has failed to reassure the workforce about the store’s future. The president of the parent group SGM has so far declined to comment on the situation, leaving employees and representatives deeply concerned about ongoing business viability and workplace conditions.
