Landes Wildfires Intensify with 1,600 Hectares Burned, Large-Scale Emergency Response Underway

The wildfires in the Landes region of southwestern France, which began on Thursday, August 13, 2026, have escalated significantly with approximately 1,600 hectares burned as of August 15. Early Saturday morning marked a critical point as the fire spread once again after a night that allowed firefighters more favorable conditions for containment.

In Luglon, a major hotspot of the wildfire, around 1,300 hectares have been scorched, with the fire divided into two zones — the initial blaze and a second zone that was ignited by a fire jump to the southeast of the village. Firefighting efforts involve 550 firefighters and 51 gendarmes who are actively working to contain the fire. Water-bombing aircraft are heavily engaged, including an Australian Chinook CH-47D, Bell 412 reconnaissance helicopter, and four Canadair planes. The Chinook has concentrated its water drops on the southeastern part of Luglon, which borders Garein and remains one of the most active sectors.

Evacuations are ongoing, with 550 residents relocated from Luglon and nearby hamlets between Luglon and Garein. No homes have been destroyed so far, but the fire’s intensity has necessitated precautionary measures such as road closures on RD 327 and RD 14 to aid emergency operations. The commune of Sabres has opened a reception center and a medical-psychological emergency unit to support evacuees.

The departmental operational center at the prefecture continues to coordinate firefighting and evacuation efforts. Authorities stress the importance of residents staying informed through official channels and avoiding the area to facilitate emergency services.

The prefect of the Landes department has acknowledged the worsening situation following the fire’s renewed expansion Saturday morning. While the previous night brought hope due to better firefighting conditions, the outbreak's resurgence has amplified challenges for containment teams.
