Laurent Wauquiez Calls for Right-Wing Unity Ahead of 2027 Presidential Election

Laurent Wauquiez, leader of the LR deputies, has issued a call for a united right-wing front to prepare for the 2027 presidential election. In a recent interview, Wauquiez proposed the creation of a common program for the right by spring, followed by a primary election to select a candidate if no clear contender emerges. This initiative aims to consolidate various factions of the right to prevent division and restore hope among right-wing voters.

Wauquiez emphasized that the primary would exclude the Rassemblement National (RN) party, led by Marine Le Pen, clarifying that RN does not identify strictly as right-wing. He criticized the idea of multiple primaries and rival Bruno Retailleau's unilateral presidential bid, deeming such moves counterproductive and potentially leading to ridicule for the party.

Highlighting the importance of agreement on substantive issues before personal ambitions, Wauquiez stated, "The good method is to first agree on the substance," underscoring his intention to focus on unity rather than individual aspirations. This approach seeks to attract voters who share similar values and reinforce the right's electoral strength in the upcoming election.
