Ligue 3 Debuts Football Video Support, Revolutionizing Match Officiating in France

The 2026 Ligue 3 season in France has introduced a significant innovation in football officiating with the launch of the Football Video Support (FVS) system, a streamlined version of VAR. This new technology was put to use during the league's inaugural matches on August 7, marking the first time such a system has been employed in French football's third tier.

FVS allows coaches to request video reviews on contentious decisions by signaling the fourth referee with a challenge card. Unlike traditional VAR systems, FVS operates without a dedicated video assistant referee, reducing operational costs and technical complexities. Each coach is allowed two challenges per match, which they retain if the challenge overturns the referee's decision.

The first use of FVS took place in the opening match between Aubagne and Thionville when Thionville's coach, Julien François, successfully challenged a red card awarded to Aubagne's Bilel Tafni. This early intervention confirmed the red card decision and demonstrated the system's practical application in real-time gameplay. The technology was also used in subsequent matches such as Caen-Valenciennes and Bastia-Puy-en-Velay to review offside goals and second yellow card incidents.

The introduction of FVS coincides with other innovations in Ligue 3, including the presence of a fourth referee for the first time. This initiative aims to enhance refereeing accuracy while maintaining cost-efficiency, reflecting a trend tested in youth World Cups and Italy's Serie C before its French debut.

By empowering coaches with the ability to challenge specific in-game decisions such as goals, penalties, and red cards, FVS represents a new phase in video-assisted football arbitration in France, combining fairness with streamlined technology.
