Major Events Drive Surge in Marseille's Local Economy and Tourism

Marseille is witnessing a remarkable boost in its local economy and tourism sector fueled by major events such as concerts, sports matches, and congresses. Accommodation searches in the city have soared, with Airbnb reporting a 90% increase compared to the previous year. Upcoming concerts by rapper JUL at the Vélodrome stadium are set to attract between 130,000 and 150,000 fans, continuing a trend of large-scale gatherings, including a mass held by Pope Francis that drew 60,000 attendees.

Tourism remains a critical economic pillar in Provence, generating 3.4 billion euros annually and contributing 7% of the region's GDP. The city welcomes five million visitors each year, supporting 23,000 jobs. Maxime Tissot from Marseille’s Office of Tourism highlighted the economic impact of large events, citing the 2024 Olympics and the Rugby World Cup as notable examples. To address challenges such as seasonal employment fluctuations and housing pressures, local authorities are focusing on distributing tourist activity more evenly throughout the year.

A key strategy involves expanding the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) sector, which is anticipated to generate 168 million euros in 2025. The Aix-Marseille-Provence area ranks 95th worldwide for international congresses, indicating growing prominence in this market. These efforts aim to stabilize Marseille’s economy year-round by attracting diverse visitors beyond the peak seasons.
