Man Sentenced to 12 Years for 32 Deliberate Fires in Charente

A 32-year-old man has been sentenced to twelve years in prison for deliberately setting 32 fires across Charente between July 2022 and October 2023. The Charente criminal court handed down the sentence on September 18, 2026, following the prosecution's call for a strict penalty to address the severity of the offenses. Prosecutor David Arnault described the accused as a “living bomb,” emphasizing the need for a strong judicial response.

The fires caused extensive damage, including a forest fire that consumed nearly 150 hectares and a blaze at an agricultural building storing around 1,000 tons of straw. This spate of arson required the mobilization of approximately 2,000 firefighters and resulted in estimated damages of nearly two million euros.

In addition to imprisonment, the court imposed a ten-year socio-judicial follow-up that includes mandatory treatment and a work obligation. The man is also banned from residing in Charente or engaging in any forestry-related activities. Furthermore, he must compensate the victims of the fires.

The defendant, who has a history of criminal behavior, attributed his actions to personal struggles stemming from a troubled childhood marked by family violence, financial instability, the loss of a child, and alcohol addiction. He has decided not to appeal the court's decision.

This comprehensive sentencing highlights the gravity with which the judicial system is treating such cases of repeated deliberate arson, stressing both punishment and rehabilitation measures aimed at preventing future offenses.
