Matthieu Valet Leads RN in Lille's Fragmented 2026 Municipal Elections

Matthieu Valet will lead the Rassemblement national in Lille's 2026 municipal election amid a fragmented left and post-Martine Aubry era.

    Key details

  • • Matthieu Valet announced as RN candidate for Lille 2026 municipal elections.
  • • Martine Aubry resigned as Lille mayor; Arnaud Deslandes is her successor.
  • • RN previously received only 6.84% in 2020 Lille municipal elections.
  • • The left is fragmented with multiple candidates from Socialist, Ecologist, La France insoumise, and Renaissance parties.

Matthieu Valet, a 39-year-old former police officer and spokesperson for the Rassemblement national (RN), has been announced as the RN's candidate for the upcoming Lille municipal elections in March 2026. Valet, who was born, raised, and currently works in Lille, represents the far-right party which garnered only 6.84% of the vote in the last municipal elections in 2020.

This election marks a significant political shift for Lille as it will be the first without longtime Socialist Mayor Martine Aubry, who recently resigned to make way for her deputy, Arnaud Deslandes. The left is notably fragmented with multiple candidates representing different factions: the Socialist Party under Deslandes, the Ecologists led by Stéphane Baly, La France insoumise with Lahouaria Addouche, and the Renaissance party represented by Violette Spillebout.

The fragmented left contrasts with RN's attempt to strengthen its local presence under Valet's candidacy, but the RN faces an uphill battle given its previous low vote share. The March 2026 election will be crucial in reshaping Lille's political landscape following Aubry's departure and amid the varied political forces vying for control, highlighting a city at a crossroads politically.
