In a remarkable display of skill at the 2025 French Swimming Championships held in Montpellier, Maxime Grousset clocked an impressive 47.50 seconds in the 100m freestyle, marking the third-best time of his career. This achievement secures his spot at the upcoming World Championships in Singapore.
Grousset, who previously set a new French record in the 50m butterfly during the same championships, nearly matched Alain Bernard's 2009 French record of 46.94 seconds. Following his race, the 26-year-old expressed satisfaction with his performance but noted the need for improvement, stating, "It's a good time and I'm happy, but I still take a big hit at the end. The goal now is to do the same while being a bit more relaxed. I don’t yet have the return I need."
Additionally, young swimmer Rafael Fente Damers qualified for the World Championships with a personal best time of 48.02 seconds. Grousset praised the new generation of talent, saying, "It's cool to see the young ones coming up. It pushes me. I know that if I don't give my all, I won't win. This emulation is positive for everyone." Other athletes such as David Aubry in the 800m freestyle and Lilou Ressencourt in the 200m butterfly also met the qualification standards.
