Michel Portal, Renowned French Musician and Jazz Icon, Dies at 90

Michel Portal, a celebrated classical clarinetist, multi-instrumentalist, and a giant of jazz, passed away on February 12, 2026, in Paris at the age of 90. Born in Bayonne on November 27, 1935, Portal’s expansive musical career defied genres, ranging from classical to post-jazz and various folk traditions.

Growing up in Bayonne's artisanal neighborhoods, Portal began learning the bandoneon at the age of nine, encouraged by his Argentinian father, and soon transitioned to clarinet studies at the local music school. Recognized early on for his talent, he gave his first public performances in Bayonne at just 10 years old. In honor of his early contributions, the Bayonne theater was named after him in 2019 by Mayor Jean-René Etchegaray.

Known as a brilliant improviser and composer, Portal pushed musical boundaries by excelling both in free saxophone solos and as part of ensembles performing works by Mozart. Despite initial skepticism from classical purists about his engagement with diverse musical settings, he successfully shattered conventions to emerge as a towering figure in contemporary jazz.
