Orange Heatwave Alerts Issued Across 26 French Departments, Public Urged to Take Precautions

Météo-France has issued orange heatwave alerts for 26 departments across France starting June 18, 2026, signaling a period of intense heat expected to impact the country. Among the affected areas are Haute-Saône, where temperatures will range between 34 and 37°C during the day and 18 to 21°C at night, and nine departments served by VINCI Autoroutes, including Yvelines, Essonne, Hauts-de-Seine, Eure-et-Loir, Loiret, Yonne, Cher, Puy-de-Dôme, and Rhône.

Authorities have emphasized the need for vigilance, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly and isolated individuals. The prefecture in Haute-Saône recommended several health measures: staying hydrated by drinking water regularly without waiting to feel thirsty, avoiding physical exertion, remaining in cool environments, using cooling methods like misting or lukewarm showers, and maintaining contact with at-risk relatives. The public was also cautioned against leaving vulnerable persons in parked cars under direct sunlight, even briefly.

To mitigate risks associated with the heat, VINCI Autoroutes has mobilized teams to assist drivers traversing the nine impacted departments they serve. They advise travelers to prepare before journeys, avoid traveling during the hottest hours of the day, and to stay hydrated throughout their trips.

Emergency services have urged citizens to call 15 or contact 112 if acute health issues arise due to the heat. These combined measures aim to reduce heat-related health risks amid this significant heatwave event affecting a broad swath of the country.

The heatwave is projected to persist through Friday, with both day and night temperatures remaining elevated. Continued monitoring by Météo-France and local authorities ensures that public safety advisories remain up to date as conditions evolve.
