On October 24, 2026, France experienced large-scale protests primarily focused on issues of purchasing power and the defense of public services, resulting in 1,314 arrests nationwide and 53 law enforcement officers injured, according to official reports from the Ministry of the Interior.
The protests drew an estimated 410,000 to 800,000 participants across the country, with Paris alone hosting between 110,000 and 250,000 demonstrators. In the capital, authorities made 142 arrests, detaining 126 individuals, with around 500 identified as ‘casseurs’—troublemakers involved in violence. Cities like Marseille and Toulouse also saw violent incidents, including a serious hand injury sustained by a 20-year-old man in Toulouse.
Responding to the unrest, authorities mobilized approximately 70,000 police and gendarmes, marking a 20% increase in security presence compared to previous protests. Specialized units such as the GIGN and BRI were also deployed. Despite efforts to prevent violence, 24 businesses were looted during the demonstrations.
The Ministry of the Interior praised law enforcement for their preparation and response, noting that attempts by radical left groups to escalate violence were largely contained. The Minister of the Interior, Laurent Nuñez, condemned the actions of extreme activists while highlighting the overall controlled environment compared to prior weeks.
These protests coincided with a far-right Rassemblement National party congress in Paris, which attracted counter-protests as well. The events followed President Emmanuel Macron’s public advice against demonstrating due to adverse weather but did not deter large participation.
Looking ahead, further protests are planned for October 31 and November 5, 2026, with continued involvement from student and labor organizations. Several investigations have been launched to address incidents of violence and property damage during the October 24 demonstrations.
